Recessed Lighting Planning Basics
You’ve seen them in every home renovation show - those clean, flush-mounted lights that disappear into the ceiling and bathe the room in even light. Recessed lights look simple. But planning them? That’s where things get tricky.
Here’s what nobody tells you: the difference between great recessed lighting and a ceiling full of shadows comes down to planning - not fancy fixtures. You can buy the most expensive lights on the market, but if you put them in the wrong spots with the wrong trim, you’ll still end up with a dim, uneven room that you’ll want to rip out and redo.

The Big Decisions You Need to Make First
Recessed lighting isn’t one-size-fits-all. Before you buy anything, you need to decide:
- New construction or remodel? This determines what type of housing you need
- IC rated or not? This depends on whether you have insulation above the ceiling
- What size fixture? 4-inch, 6-inch, or the new ultra-thin wafers
- What trim style? This changes how the light looks in the room
- What color temperature? Warm, neutral, or cool light changes the feel of the space
- What spacing? Too close and it looks like an airport runway. Too far and you get dark spots
Let’s break each one down.
New Construction vs. Remodel Housings
This is the first fork in the road, and it determines everything else.
New construction housings are designed to be installed before the drywall goes up. They have mounting brackets that nail directly to the ceiling joists, so the housing is securely fastened and the drywall gets cut around it. If you’re building new or doing a full ceiling tear-off, this is what you want.
Remodel (or “old work”) housings are designed to be installed through a hole cut in the existing drywall. They have clips or tension springs that clamp the housing to the ceiling from above. If your drywall is already finished - which is most renovation situations - you want remodel housings.
The difference matters. Using new construction housings in an existing ceiling is a pain. Using remodel housings when you have open ceiling is leaving strength on the table.
Wafer-thin LED lights are the third option and have become incredibly popular in the last few years. These are ultra-slim LED fixtures - maybe half an inch thick - that mount directly to the drywall without any housing at all. They’re ideal for shallow ceilings and remodels where you don’t have attic access. They install through a single hole and connect with a quick-connect wiring harness. The downside? If the LED driver fails, you replace the whole fixture - there’s no separate bulb to swap.
IC Rated vs. Non-IC: Not Optional
This is the most misunderstood part of recessed lighting planning. Let me make it simple.
IC stands for “Insulation Contact.” An IC-rated housing can be buried under insulation without creating a fire hazard. A non-IC housing needs at least 3 inches of clearance from any insulation.
Why does this matter? Because if you put a non-IC light in a ceiling that has insulation above it, the heat from the bulb builds up inside the housing. Over time, that heat can degrade the wiring, damage the ceiling drywall, and in extreme cases - start a fire.
Here’s the rule: if there’s any insulation above your ceiling, use IC-rated housings. If your ceiling is on the top floor of your house, you almost certainly have insulation up there. If it’s a ceiling below an unconditioned attic, you definitely do. The only time you can safely use non-IC is in a ceiling where you know - not guess, know - there’s no insulation above it.
IC-rated housings cost a few dollars more. Worth every penny.
The good news: most modern LED-rated housings are IC-rated by default. And the wafer-thin lights run so cool that they’re almost always rated for insulation contact. But check the specification sheet before you buy.
What Size Recessed Light Should You Use?
Recessed lights come in a range of sizes, but for residential use you’ll mostly be choosing between 4-inch and 6-inch fixtures.
6-inch lights were the standard for decades. They put out a lot of light, and they were designed for the old screw-in bulbs (BR30 or PAR30). If you have a larger room - living room, open kitchen, basement - 6-inch lights are still a solid choice.
4-inch lights have become the new standard, especially in modern homes. They’re smaller, more discreet, and with modern LED technology they put out as much light as the old 6-inchers. They look cleaner in smaller rooms, low ceilings, and tight spaces like hallways.
2-inch and 3-inch lights exist for accent lighting, under cabinets, and architectural details. They’re not your main light source.
A good rule of thumb: if your ceiling is 8 feet or lower, go with 4-inch lights. For ceilings 9 feet and higher, 6-inch gives you better light distribution. With the wafer-thin LED lights, you don’t have to worry about size as much - they’re all roughly the same diameter regardless of output.
Trim Styles - How the Light Actually Looks
The trim is the part you see from below. It changes the look and function of the light more than most people realize.
Baffle trim - the most common type. The interior has ridges (baffles) that reduce glare and make the light look softer. The trim usually has a white or matte finish. Good for general lighting in living rooms, bedrooms, and hallways.
Reflector trim - has a smooth, reflective interior that maximizes light output. Good for task lighting in kitchens, workshops, and garages. The downside: more glare, because you can see the bright bulb surface.
Gimbal trim - the light can be tilted and rotated. This lets you aim light at a specific wall, piece of art, or workspace. Excellent for accent lighting and kitchen islands. You can also get “eyeball” trims that work similarly but are fixed at an angle.
Wall wash trim - designed to aim light at a wall, creating an even wash of light across the surface. Great for highlighting artwork, textured walls, or curtained windows. The trim has a shield that directs the light sideways rather than straight down.
Lensed trim - has a glass or plastic lens covering the opening. The lens is usually frosted or prismatic to spread the light evenly. Good for wet locations like bathrooms and showers, or anywhere you want a fully sealed fixture.
For most rooms, I recommend baffle trim for general lighting and gimbal or wall wash for accent lighting. Mix and match trims in the same room - it’s a great way to layer your lighting.
Color Temperature - Warm, Neutral, or Cool
You know that harsh, blue-white light that makes everything look like a hospital operating room? That’s a color temperature problem. And it’s the most common mistake I see homeowners make.
Color temperature is measured in Kelvin (K) . The lower the number, the warmer (more yellow) the light. The higher the number, the cooler (more blue) the light.
- 2700K - warm, soft light. Similar to an old incandescent bulb. Great for living rooms, bedrooms, dining rooms - anywhere you want a cozy feel.
- 3000K - warm white. Slightly cleaner than 2700K but still warm. The most popular choice for modern homes. Works in almost any room.
- 3500K - neutral white. A middle ground. Good for kitchens and bathrooms where you want a clean look without feeling cold.
- 4000K - cool white. Bright and crisp. Best for garages, workshops, basements, and utility spaces. Too harsh for most living areas.
- 5000K+ - daylight. Very blue. Hospital, retail, or commercial feel. Rarely used in homes except for specific task areas.
My recommendation: pick 2700K or 3000K for living spaces and 3000K or 3500K for kitchens and bathrooms. Stay consistent within a room. Mixing 2700K and 4000K in the same space looks disjointed and amateur.
Better yet, buy selectable CCT (Correlated Color Temperature) lights. These have a small switch on the fixture that lets you choose between 2700K, 3000K, 3500K, 4000K, and sometimes 5000K. You can adjust after installation. They cost a few dollars more and are worth every cent.
Spacing and Layout - Where to Put the Lights
This is the part that separates good lighting from great lighting. And there’s a simple formula that gets you 90% of the way there.
The half-ceiling-height rule: Divide your ceiling height by two. That’s how far apart your lights should be. For an 8-foot ceiling, space lights 4 feet apart. For a 9-foot ceiling, 4.5 feet apart. For a 10-foot ceiling, 5 feet apart.
From the wall, place your first light at roughly half the spacing distance. So for 8-foot ceilings, lights are 4 feet apart and the first light is about 2 feet from the wall.
This is a starting point - not a hard rule. Room shape, furniture placement, and the purpose of the lighting all affect the final layout. But if you follow the half-height rule, you won’t end up with glaring hot spots or dark caves.
Room-by-Room Tips
Kitchens: Recessed lights should be positioned to illuminate countertops, not the middle of the room. If you put lights in a grid centered on the room, you’ll be standing in your own shadow at the counter. Offset the lights to fall over the counter edges. Add under-cabinet task lighting - it fills in the shadows and makes food prep infinitely better.
Living rooms: You don’t need recessed lights everywhere. A grid of 4-6 lights in a typical living room is plenty. Layer in floor lamps and table lamps for ambient light. A living room lit entirely by overhead recessed lights can feel like a conference room.
Bathrooms: Use recessed lights over the shower (with a wet-rated trim), one or two over the sink area, and consider a wall wash over the mirror. Don’t put a single light in the center of the ceiling - it creates harsh shadows on your face.
Hallways: Space lights evenly down the length, offset from the exact center if the hallway is narrow. For a 10-foot hallway with 8-foot ceilings, two lights 4 feet apart with the first one 2 feet from the end works well.
Basements: More is better here. Basements tend to be darker, and you’ll appreciate having full coverage. 4-inch lights spaced 4 feet apart on 8-foot ceilings gives you bright, even light in a basement.
The Task Light vs. Ambient Light Distinction
A room full of recessed lights on one dimmer switch gives you one look: everything on or everything off. That’s ambient lighting.
Great lighting design uses layers. Recessed lights provide the ambient layer. Then add task lighting (under-cabinet lights, pendant lights over an island, a reading lamp) and accent lighting (wall washes, art lights, cove lighting) for depth.
Install your recessed lights on at least two dimmer switches if the room is large. Having the kitchen zone on one dimmer and the dining area on another gives you flexibility. And always use compatible dimmer switches - not all LEDs dim well with old dimmers. Dimmer Compatibility - Don’t Skip This
Here’s a problem I see constantly: a homeowner installs beautiful LED recessed lights and a dimmer switch, but the lights flicker, buzz, or won’t dim below 50%.
The cause is almost always incompatible dimmers. LEDs work differently than incandescent bulbs. They need a dimmer specifically rated for LED loads. Standard incandescent dimmers don’t play well with LEDs.
When you buy your recessed lights, check the manufacturer’s dimmer compatibility list. Most LED brands publish a list of tested dimmers. Buy from that list. If they don’t have a list, Lutron and Leviton make high-quality LED-compatible dimmers that work with most fixtures.
Also check the total wattage. A single LED downlight might draw 10-15 watts, but twelve of them add up. Make sure your dimmer is rated for the total load. LED-rated dimmers typically handle 150-600 watts of LED load depending on the model.
The Installation Process - What to Expect
If you’re hiring an electrician, here’s roughly what the process looks like. For larger projects, check when electrical work needs a permit before the first hole gets cut.
- Layout and marking - the electrician measures and marks each light location on the ceiling
- Cutting holes - using a hole saw or drywall saw
- Running wire - from the switch to each light location
- Connecting the fixtures - wiring each light to the circuit
- Installing the trims - snapping or screwing the trim into place
- Installing and wiring the dimmer - replacing your old switch
- Testing - powering on and checking each light
For 6-8 lights in a standard room with accessible attic space, expect a professional installation to take 4-6 hours. If the electrician has to patch drywall or fish wire through finished ceilings, add time.
If you’re doing it yourself, the cutting and wiring are straightforward - but fishing wire through finished ceilings is the hard part. If you don’t have attic access, consider the wafer-thin lights that fit through a smaller hole and use quick connectors.
